Jorge Cancio Meliá

Madrid - Adviser-Deputy to the Director of Information Society Services, General Direction for the Development of the Information Society, Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade

Mr. Jorge Cancio Meliá is Advisor at the Directorate for Information Society Services (DISS), acting as Deputy to its Director, within the State Secretariat for Telecommunications and Information Society (SETSI). SETSI is the principal body within the Spanish Government responsible for telecommunications and information society policies. The Directorate for Information Society Services covers different topics, such as information society services and electronic commerce regulation and supervision, electronic signatures providers’ regulation and supervision, policy relating to domain names and, in particular, the “.es”, definition of Internet Governance policy, intellectual property issues associated to the information society, re-use of public sector information as well as information and network security.
Mr. Cancio Meliá is the principal legal and policy advisor of the Directorate in the abovementioned fields and in the international arena he has been so far DISS’ representative for Internet Governance issues both in the UN World Summit on the Information Society and in European Union coordination working groups, in particular, the High Level Group on Internet Governance. Since 2003 Mr. Cancio acts as the Spanish representative in ICANN’s Government Advisory Comittee. Prior joining DISS, Mr. Cancio Meliá was Head of Area of Legal Affairs in the Directorate for Telecommunications Regulation within SETSI. He holds a law degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid as well as a LL.M. from the Benjamin N. Cardozo Law School, New York.
