    Roundtable
    Duration (minutes): 90
Format description: This workshop plans to follow the format of a 90-minute roundtable. For one thing, we are working on inviting 5 total speakers, including the moderator, to join our multistakeholder discussion on the key issues in applying Generative-AI to the healthcare industry. This allows each speaker to share their opinions in details. For another thing, a roundtable layout helps create a friendly atmosphere for interactive discussion, where participants can ask and answer questions with each other freely. This is important because we need to learn from different viewpoints to collectively solve the issues under discussion.

    Policy Question(s)

A.How to strengthen regulatory cooperation in applying Generative-AI to the healthcare industry at the national, regional and international level?

B.How to effectively mobilize resources from government, enterprises, technical communities, academic institutions and social organizations, in maximizing the innovative capacity and controlling the potential risks, when applying Generative-AI to the healthcare industry?

C.What are some typical weaknesses in current governance frameworks for Generative-AI application, and how to improve? How can we learn from current successful cases and experiences of applying Generative-AI to the healthcare industry in China and other countries? How can we learn from other practices in global internet governance?

What will participants gain from attending this session? The application of Generative-AI in the medical field can greatly enhance diagnostics efficiency, promote more personalized and precise treatment services, as well as reduce costs. However, it also brings challenges in various aspects including personal privacy protection and ethical standards adherence.

Against the backdrop of this transformation, we aim to organize an IGF 2024 workshop that can inform participants of both the innovative advantages and potential risks of applying Generative-AI to the healthcare industry, helping to raise public awareness of risk control in Generative-AI application as an indispensable component of internet governance. In particular, they will draw insights from successful cases and experiences of such application in China and other countries. Based on this discussion, participants can explore constructive actions to prevent and mitigate risks in applying Generative-AI to the healthcare industry.

    Description:

Organized by International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) China Secretariat and held in a hybrid format, this workshop focuses on key issues to be concerned in the application of Generative-AI to the healthcare industry. Our goal is to provide a communication platform for experts from technical community and private sector to explore ways of unleashing innovative potential of Generative-AI in improving healthcare services while managing risks associated with the application of such technologies.

During this workshop, participants will not only share their insights on harnessing benefits brought by the application of Generative-AI innovative technologies in predictive analysis, image recognition, personalized treatment plans and machine learning-optimized clinical pathways, but also analyze risks that need to be balanced, including data privacy and security, possibility of over-reliance on technology, adaptability of regulation to technological advancement, as well as ethical issues.

It's important to adopt a cooperative approach in solving key issues to be concerned in the application of Generative-AI to the healthcare industry, because this is a process where multiple stakeholders such as government agencies and regulators, healthcare institutions and doctors, patients, technology providers as well as pharmaceutical and medical device companies are involved. We aim to facilitate our discussion with a multistakeholder approach, enabling participants to offer recommendations on risk control in the application of Generative-AI to the healthcare industry from technical, regulatory, educational, social and other different perspectives.

One of the inspiring features of this workshop is the introduction of successful cases and experiences of applying Generative-AI to the healthcare industry. Participants will exchange ideas on how China and other countries are tackling potential risks associated with such application. This also provides engagement opportunities for both onsite and online participants to ask and answer questions, so as to learn from current best practices that have delivered concrete impacts and results.

    Expected Outcomes

This workshop expects to facilitate a multistakeholder discussion on key issues to be concerned in the application of Generative-AI to the healthcare industry, which is one of the most important transformations that we need to prepare for in order to create our sustainable digital future. Through this discussion, participants will gain a broader and clearer understanding of applying Generative-AI to the healthcare industry as a complex development process, where both innovation and risks exist. Guided by the three policy questions, this workshop also expects to collect recommendations on ways to improve governance frameworks for Generative-AI application, to strengthen regulatory cooperation in such application at different levels, and to effectively mobilize resources for a risk-control approach in applying this technology. We encourage participants to build on this workshop by holding relevant meetings to continue discussions as well as writing reports to share diverse ideas.

Hybrid Format: This workshop aims to deliver a hybrid communication on the key issues in applying Generative-AI to the healthcare industry, so that both onsite and online participants can effectively engage with the discussion.

In advance of the workshop, we plan to collect topics that will be touched upon by all speakers, and questions that all attendees wish to ask. Based on this information, we can match the topics and the questions in order to facilitate interaction between onsite and online speakers and attendees.

During the workshop, the onsite moderator and speaker will use complementary online tools (e.g. simultaneously sharing documents being discussed onsite and online via WeChat) to ensure sufficient connectivity. They will pay attention to new questions raised by onsite attendees and through online chatting, and integrate them into the Q&A session. We hope that the above measures can help create the best possible experience for all participants.
